Why do you call yourself Geek Girl?

The short answer to this question is that I am a geek. It wasn’t until the past five years that I really began to embrace my quirkiness and nerdiness as a positive, but it’s always been a part of me. My dolls rode around on the Millenium Falcon. I watched Star Trek. I waited in line for an hour to see Return of the Jedi way back when.

Being able to really geek out about something is a gift, and it’s something that I bring to massage. I love learning about the muscles and the skeletal system, and I love anatomy. I find myself reading about anatomy for fun, and I’m always learning new things about massage and its applications to pain and dysfunction. I don’t just do this to help my clients, I do it because I love to learn.

To quote Simon Pegg, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.”

When I was thinking of names for a massage business, I thought of who I am as a person, and I think all my friends can agree that I am a Geek Girl. I’m happy to bring that enthusiasm to my profession, and I think that it translates into better, more-informed work.
