Fort Worth’s No-Fail Relief from Back Pain

I know that in today’s hectic world, it’s easy to find yourself with low back pain. And – when that happens you start to Google ‘massage therapy fort worth’ because you’ve heard massage can help, right?

I’m going to tell you 3 reasons why my 90-minute massage is a winner every time!

My 90-minute massage can and often includes the following because I customize the massage to fit your needs.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a great way to help loosen muscles. And many of my clients report that it does help them move better and their pain decreases.  In fact, I use it on myself with my own hip pain that creeps up from time to time.

Heat Therapy

Using hot stones are warm towels with an area that’s sore can help promote blood flow to the area. It helps tight muscles relax and chill out. Plus, it just helps give you an out of this world relaxing experience!

After your muscles are warmed up and have begun to relax, I incorporate passive stretching into your massage.  What does this mean?  It means you stay relaxed and I do the work.  I move your hips and legs to help you stretch.

The clients I have who regularly get this type of massage report a drastic improvement in their range of motion and a decrease in pain.  And, when we can walk better, we can get back to the things we love doing!

Does this sound like the massage you’re looking for?

These Massage Trends are OUT!

Some trends in massage therapy are here for the duration. Some things come and go. I’m going to let you know about some things in my practice that I’m letting go of as of NOW.

Coconut Oil

People love, love, love coconut oil.  They love the smell, the fact that it’s natural, and contains Vitamin E.  And, in the past, I’d heat it up and use it when it’s requested. However, coconut oil can also damage my massage sheets when not treated immediately. And this is costly. So, I’m letting go of coconut oil.  I’ll still keep some salve with coconut oil for those who are allergic to jojoba, but I’ll no longer keep any in a bottle.  Sorry coconut – I love you, but you’re getting the boot in your current state.

30 Minute Massages

This isn’t on my list of services.  Yet, when current clients call and say, “Is there any way you can fit me in for just 30 minutes?” I’d look at my calendar and if I had time, I would.  No more!  Normally when this happens, the client is in some sort of muscle pain.  And, it’s not that I don’t want to help, but I know that 30 minutes isn’t long enough to address what is going on.  So, that’s right folks!  I’m happy to provide you with links to stretches and foam rolling techniques while you wait to book for an hour to 90 minutes so that you can truly get the relief you need.

Face Massage Add-on

Currently, this add-on is just a face massage with rose oil.  This isn’t technically getting the boot, but instead it’s getting revamped!

Cupping massage is a new trend, and it’s here to STAY!  So, I’m adding face cupping to this service in hopes so that it’s even more amazing. And BONUS – It’s really great for things like TMJ and even helps with sinus congestion.

Common Massage Problems in Winter

When you think of Winter, you may think of the holidays, warm fuzzy socks, and family fun. But it’s also a time when people tend to get out of their routine.

And sometimes this can lead to these 3 common massage problems.

The Weekend Warrior:

You’ve been taking a break from your routine, and now work has begun and you need to catch up on things!  So you work late; you take less breaks.  Then the weekend comes and BOOM – you take the kids to the trampoline park and over indulge yourself and kinda hurt your knee.  Then maybe it snows where you live so then you have to shovel snow.  Now, not only your knee hurts, but so does your back!

The Fix: Take breaks. Stretch. Keep up with your self massage techniques.

Getting off your Self Care Routine

This is so easy to do when the kids are home for the holidays. And, it really doesn’t matter if your children are primary school age or home from college. You want to spend time with them, and childcare may be hard to find since your regular sitter is away on break, too.

The Fix: Just because the kids are at home doesn’t mean you have to stop taking care of yourself. If anything, you have a greater reason because being a parent is tough work! Pour yourself that cup of tea, check out your favorite online yoga routine, and cash in on the babysitting your neighbor owes you and go sip that wine you’ve been eying.

And the great thing?  The kids have all gone back to school so now you really CAN focus on YOU for a bit.

Did you get to go skiing?  Or did you drive 7 hours to visit the grandparents?  The Winter holidays are a popular time to get out of dodge and travel.

The Fix: Schedule a massage before your trip and one after you’ve been home a few days. That’ll help remind you to keep up with your stretching routine while on the road.

I hope these fixes help you enjoy your winter. Keeping up with your self care will keep you drinking your favorite coffee and binging your favorite shows all winter long!  I’m still working on Game of Thrones!

Did you over do it this holiday and need to book your massage?  Book it here:

Geek Girl’s Massage Manifesto

Some people think that every massage you get is the same.  They think that a deep tissue massage at a chain is the same deep tissue massage you get at my Fort Worth massage practice. That’s not the case though!

Sit back because I’m gonna tell you why the massage you get in my office is different than the one down the street or across town.

I believe that massage doesn’t have to hurt to work.

In my office, I don’t use my elbows to squish all your trigger points because that hurts! My approach to massage is gentler.  While there still may be a few tender spots, the way I glide over your muscles help me achieve a 75% reduction of pain with 80% of my clients after the first massage.

I believe in carrying the best massage products.

The massage oils I use are 100% organic. This includes the CBD oil that I recently got from Mountain Pure CBD.  And the ointment I often use after cupping your back? Well, according to a client it’s magical.  I often say it was crafted by elves, but really it’s a special blend of organic oils, including some essential oils.

I believe that every client should leave my office completely relaxed.

This is true no matter what massage you request.  Did you only book a 45 minute Focus Massage because your shoulders were killing you?  Well, you’ll still get that drowsy massage high that makes you want to take a nap!

I believe that cupping massage can help your chronic pain.

I don’t charge extra for cupping.  Why is that? Cupping not only helps YOU as a client, but it helps me decrease the chance of my own repetitive stress injury.  When I ask clients to describe what they feel during their first cupping session, they pretty much say the same thing.  “It just feels cool…I can’t even describe how cool it is.”  And, you know what? I get it! I felt that way after my first cupping massage.

I believe that everyone deserves a little spa in their massage.

While I’m not a spa, I include a few “spa-like” element because even the nerdiest geeks deserve to feel pampered, even if only for a small portion of a therapeutic massage.  This is why I heat up hot stones and use them on your back and shoulders as well as your feet.  It’s also why I use hot towels on your feet. It feels out of this world to the Star Wars obsessed police officer, the Potterhead copywriter, and to the Domestic Engineer who has two young boys at home all day.
Thank you for reading my Massage Manifesto.  Do you know a desk jockey who suffers from neck and shoulder pain?  Maybe a new mom who is having low back pain?

How to Bring Self Care to Work in 2018

A friend once quipped that she was glad the term self care was trending because it allowed her to be selfish a few times a week. I don’t view it as being selfish though. Is it really selfish to spend 30 minutes a day reading a book? Nope!

However, it’s tricky bringing elements of self care into the workplace because you don’t want to seem like a slacker to your boss! And if I’m your boss, I’m not going to buy your recent purchase on Amazon as self care.  Even if you ARE buying a new foam roller.

So, how do you bring some self care to work with you?  Read on because I’m going to tell you!

Take a Lunch Break

I’m not talking about a 10 minute working lunch at your desk while you down your left-over spaghetti from two nights ago. If your boss gives you an hour lunch, then take that hour!  Grab your lunch, get a work mate and go outside. Talk about your lives, and not that spreadsheet you’re finishing up for your deadline. Would you rather eat a sandwich and read a book?  Then, do it!

Take a Walk

About to have a sugar crash because it’s 10:30 and your coffee is wearing off? Then it’s time for a mental break. Put a 10 minute pause on things and take some laps in the hallway.  Get your blood flowing. Are there stairs in your office? Walk up a few flights and stretch your legs.  There’s a reason why teachers love recess so much. It’s because the kids come back more focused and ready to work. Adults need small breaks during the day as well.

Desk Yoga

I have talked about this before, but this is something you can do even if you can’t get up from the desk yet. Help combat muscle fatigue by doing neck, shoulder and wrist stretches while you’re about to switch gears and move on to your next task.

Create a Healthy Workspace

Keep your desk clutter free. If your office mates are cool with it then get a small diffuser and inhale some uplifting essential oil blends. Those things can help you stay focused because you’re not worrying about the stench coming from the workroom down the hall.

Create Short Lists of Top Priorities

When I was teaching, I had lists that were pages long. No wonder I felt that I accomplished anything. My brain was overwhelmed! I was going about it the wrong way!  Instead of a list of 50 items, I should have kept it to 2 or 3 really important things. And, instead of feeling like a lazy loser at the end of the day, I would have felt like I was on top of things.  Take a lesson from my former self! You’ll be happier and more productive by keeping your lists shorter.

Here’s hoping that your work weeks will feel less cluttered and that you’re able to bring in some healthy habits to work in 2018!

How to Keep Tech Neck at Bay in 2018

This is the time of year when people start thinking of New Year’s Resolutions.  A big resolution is always To Be Healthier and that usually includes exercising more. If your neck and shoulders are always in pain, it’s hard to start that exercise regimen.

At Geek Girl Massage Therapy, I help people deal with Tech Neck all the time, but there are some things you can do at home to help combat the problem while you wait for your next appointment.

Keep Your Phone at Eye Level

I do it and so does everyone else.  We look down at our phones when texting, surfing the net and using social media.  This puts a lot of strain on your neck.  So, lift up your arms and hold your phone at eye level.

Try Desk Yoga

During your work time, take a few minutes every hour to do some simple neck and shoulder stretches. Your co-workers might look at you funny, but soon they will be jealous of your ability to work relatively pain free due to the fact you practice desk yoga and get regular massage.  Need an example? Check out my video.

Set Time Limits

Don’t get sucked into the rabbit hole of cat videos, snarky memes and Facebook updates. Set your alarm, and when it goes off, put that phone away and do something else.  If you’re at work, then that’s the time for you to practice your desk yoga and then get up and take a little walk around the building.

Massage does help with tech neck, but it will keep coming back if some of these work habits aren’t addressed.

5 Gifts under $10 in Fort Worth

Christmas is almost here, and while a lot of big gifts are already purchased, sometimes we need those last minute gifts!

So, Fort Worth, I’ve got the research for you! Here are 5 gifts from local businesses that are under $10.

Melt Ice Cream

Even in Winter, ice cream hits the spot!  What better way to show someone you’re thinking of them than a gift certificate to devour premium ice cream with some of the most unique flavors in town!

Fort Worth Locals

Do you need a unique Fort Worth gift for someone who loves beer?  Then, the Cowboy Hat glass is for you!  And, while I’m at it! That Fort Worth is Not Boring sticker?  Your day planner needs that!

Craftwork Coffee Co

They have one of the best Chai Tea Lattes I’ve ever tasted!  But do you know what else they have? Golden Milk! It’s true.  They have yummy almond milk with tumeric, ginger and black pepper.  So, even if coffee isn’t your thing, these two drinks will knock your socks off, no matter which location you choose!

Wag Canine Emporium

Is there a dog lover you’d like to surprise?  Then this bakery and boutique is the place to go! If the dog is happy, their human is happy. Right?

Olive Tree Body Care

Do me a favor! Stay away from malls this Christmas. Help your friends out by sharing this post with them so they can shop small and shop local too!

Declutter Your Mind in 2018

It’s a great time of year to have fun, enjoy life, drink cocktails. Unfortunately, it can also be a time of stress and overwhelm. There’s no worse feeling than waking up after the holidays feeling broke, empty, or overwhelmed with life. How can you defeat this sensation, move forward, and enjoy yourself?

First, reflect on what you can remove from your life.

Here’s my suggestions on how to declutter your mind as we get ready for the New Year.

I’ve talked about this before, but those deep yoga breaths can have a calming effect on your mind. With each breath just let what’s bothering you slip away. Just 10 minutes a day can have a big impact.

Our brains weren’t meant to multi-task. Science says so! (Want to read an article that talks about some of the science about it? Go here.) So don’t worry about gift-wrapping or making a dish for that potluck party while you’re at work – everything that needs to get done will get done. Focus on one task at a time. You’re mind will thank you.

Do less
I’m not talking about just totally slacking off. I’m saying look at your To-Do list and pick just the essentials. Skip the rest because they can wait.

Get Outside
Talk a walk. Read a book in the sun. Sit by a tree. Soak in the vitamin D. Your body will thank you, and so will your mind.

Here’s to starting 2018 with more calm and less clutter! If you want to get more tips and updates, sign up here to get on my newsletter list:

5 Things I wish I Knew Before Setting Up My Massage Business

When you are dead set on starting your own business after massage school, life can be crazy for a while.

No, actually – it can be crazy for a year or two.

There are things I did not know or even think about when I was setting up my business.

Want to learn from my mistakes so you can build your massage business faster? Here they are.

Invest in a Business Plan on WordPress

In the beginning, I just had a free site. I had absolutely no clue that Google favored websites that are on a PAID business plan.  Hint hint – you WANT Google to favor you!

Audit a Business Class

If I could do it all over again, I would have taken a beginner’s business class at the local university. And I even had time to kill because it took a long time for the state of Texas to actually mail my license to me. All that time I spent watching Lost in its entirety instead of learning to build my business was time wasted.

Audit a Marketing Class

Massage schools actually spend very little time teaching business and marketing.  The marketing section of class basically consisted of, “Just pass out lots of business cards.”  And, the first few years of being a solo massage therapist it seems like I spent 90% of my time marketing. Want clients and money? Spend time getting REALLY interested in your marketing.

Update My Blog Weekly

A website that’s frequently updated does better on Google searches.  It’s like Google recognizes that your business is active and rewards you. Again, you want Google to recommend you, right?

Say what?  Google Plus? (I hear you laughing and shaking your head!) I know! Who uses Google Plus? NO ONE, right? Wrong. Google uses Google Plus. So, when you’re a business owner who uses Google, you need to post to Google Plus. I made the mistake of not posting to Google Plus and soon it was like Google forgot I existed. They thought I closed down and quit my business. I even disappeared from Google Maps. But once I was told to post to Google Plus regularly, then Google blessed me and I soon showed up on maps again, and rose higher in rankings. Now, I make sure when I post to Facebook, I just go ahead and post to Google Plus too.

There are probably several other things I didn’t do.  These are the top 5 though, and if you’re a new massage therapist, or you’re thinking about becoming one, heed my advice here. DO these things. It’ll help you achieve your goals a lot faster.

Do you know a new massage therapist?  Share this post with them!
