The Purpose and Benefits of Cupping Massage

Ever wondered about  cupping therapy? It’s like a time-traveling remedy from the ancient past, where silicone cups are placed on your skin for a few minutes. But here’s the twist: instead of pushing down into the muscles like a typical massage, the cups gently lift the tissue using suction. The sensation is hard to describe at first, but a lot of people are surprised by how relaxing it feels.

Fort Worth Cupping Massage for the First Time

There are typically two styles of cupping used during a session. One is called gliding cupping, where the cups move across the muscles while creating gentle suction. A lot of people are surprised by how relaxing this feels. Some even compare five minutes of gliding cupping to a much longer deep tissue massage, especially around the shoulders and upper back.

We often use gliding cupping around the shoulder blades to help tight muscles release and improve mobility around the scapula.

The second style involves placing the cups in specific areas and allowing them to stay in place for several minutes. This creates those well-known circular marks people associate with cupping. The marks are not usually painful and typically fade within a few days.

Many people try cupping massage for:

  • chronic neck and shoulder tension
  • desk-job tightness
  • restricted range of motion
  • muscle soreness
  • stress-related tension patterns
  • recovery from repetitive strain

At Geek Girl Massage Therapy, the focus is less on trendy wellness claims and more on helping muscles relax, improving mobility, and reducing stubborn tension without relying on aggressive pressure.

Common Questions About Cupping Therapy

For most people, cupping massage is generally very safe. However, there are some situations where cupping may not be recommended.

Some contraindications include:

  • Patients using a pacemaker
  • Bleeding disorders like Hemophilia
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Stroke – unstable or evolving
  • Acute infection
  • Active psoriasis
  • Keloid Scars
  • Anti-platelet Therapy
  • Peripheral vascular disease
  • Anemia

Yes, facial cupping is an option. However, if you have facial fillers or have had Botox within the last six weeks, facial cupping would not be recommended.

Some people find facial cupping helpful for temporarily relieving TMJ tension and sinus pressure.

At Geek Girl Massage Therapy, I combine cupping massage with therapeutic massage. I use silicone cups to glide along tight muscles and areas that feel especially restricted. Then I place the cups in specific spots and let them sit for several minutes while the muscles continue to relax.

Most people are surprised that cupping massage feels gentler than they expected. The suction can feel unusual at first, but many clients find it relaxing, especially during gliding cupping.

If an area is especially tight or sensitive, you may feel more intensity in that spot, but the pressure can always be adjusted based on your comfort level.

If you’re a current client and are experiencing Frozen Shoulder, Plantar Fasciitis, or Carpal Tunnel, it may be worth is to purchase a Pain Relief Package.

If you haven’t been diagnosed with one of those conditions, and just want to try it, just book 1 session and we’ll go from there.

For people with chronic conditions like the ones mentioned above, it generally takes 4-5 sessions. Just remember that everyone is different, and a lot depends how long you’ve been dealing with the pain and lack of range of motion.

I use silicone cups because they are easier to glide.  If you’re allergic to silicone, please let me know.  I can use plastic cups.

Most people are surprised that cupping massage feels gentler and more relaxing than they expected. Instead of pushing down into the muscles like deep tissue massage, the cups create a lifting sensation using suction.

During gliding cupping, the cups move across the muscles and often feel similar to a deep stretch. Areas with a lot of chronic tension may feel more intense temporarily, but the pressure can always be adjusted based on your comfort level.

Cupping massage and deep tissue massage are both designed to work with deeper layers of muscle tension, but they feel very different.

In massage therapy, “deep tissue” refers more to the depth and intention of the work rather than simply using intense pressure. However, many clients use the term to mean very firm massage.

Cupping works differently. Instead of pushing down into the muscles, the cups use suction to gently lift and stretch the tissue. Many people are surprised that cupping can help release stubborn tension without the intense pressure they expected from traditional deep tissue work.

The Results Speak for Themselves

These side-by-side photos show the progress of a client working on shoulder mobility and pain reduction.

The first photo was taken before his initial session. The second was taken after his fourth appointment.

He came in about once a week during a six-week period, and even after the first session, he noticed a significant decrease in pain and improved range of motion.
