How to Keep Tech Neck at Bay

This is the time of year when people start thinking of New Year’s Resolutions.  A big resolution is always To Be Healthier and that usually includes exercising more. If your neck and shoulders are always in pain, it’s hard to start that exercise regimen.

At Geek Girl Massage Therapy, I help people deal with Tech Neck all the time, but there are some things you can do at home to help combat the problem while you wait for your next appointment.

Keep Your Phone at Eye Level

I do it and so does everyone else.  We look down at our phones when texting, surfing the net and using social media.  This puts a lot of strain on your neck.  So, lift up your arms and hold your phone at eye level.

Try Desk Yoga

During your work time, take a few minutes every hour to do some simple neck and shoulder stretches. Your co-workers might look at you funny, but soon they will be jealous of your ability to work relatively pain-free due to the fact you practice desk yoga and get regular massage.  Need an example? Check out my video.

Set Time Limits

Don’t get sucked into the rabbit hole of cat videos, snarky memes, and Facebook updates. Set your alarm, and when it goes off, put that phone away and do something else.  If you’re at work, then that’s the time for you to practice your desk yoga and then get up and take a little walk around the building.

Massage does help with tech neck, but it will keep coming back if some of these work habits aren’t addressed.
